Why Website Speed Matters for Your Business (and How to Fix It)
Slow websites lose customers and rankings. Learn what Core Web Vitals are, how speed affects Google rankings and conversions, and the fixes that make the biggest difference.
A website that takes four seconds to load on a mobile connection in Silchar or Guwahati has lost half its visitors before the first image appears. Speed is not a technical nicety; it is directly tied to enquiries, sales and search rankings.
What Google measures: Core Web Vitals
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how quickly the main content appears. Target under 2.5 s.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to taps. Target under 200 ms.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): whether things jump around while loading. Target under 0.1.
These are ranking signals, and you can see your real-user scores in Google Search Console under 'Core Web Vitals'.
Speed and conversions
Industry studies consistently show conversion rates dropping 5–10% for every extra second of load time. For a local business, that is the difference between the enquiry form being submitted or the visitor going back to the search results and calling a competitor.
The fixes that matter most
- Compress and resize images; serve modern formats (WebP / AVIF) and lazy-load below the fold.
- Host videos on a CDN (e.g. Cloudinary) with adaptive quality instead of embedding raw MP4s.
- Use a modern framework with static generation — Next.js pages are pre-built HTML, not assembled in the browser.
- Load fonts with `font-display: swap` and limit to one or two families.
- Remove unused plugins, tracking scripts and chat widgets that block rendering.
- Put the site behind a CDN and enable caching headers.
WordPress vs a custom build
WordPress can be fast, but most WordPress sites we audit carry 15–30 plugins, page-builder bloat and shared hosting. A custom Next.js build typically scores 95+ on Lighthouse out of the box because there is simply less to load.
How to check your own site
Run your URL through PageSpeed Insights (free from Google). Look at the mobile score and the 'Diagnose performance issues' section — it lists exactly what to fix.
